The end of the summer is often a busy time for moving to West Virginia and into a new home in Charles Town, Ranson, Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg, Inwood, Falling Waters, or Hedgesville. But along with an exciting new journey through local real estate comes many decisions, options, and boxes! You've sifted through homes for sale in Jefferson County and Berkeley County, found your dream property and piece of Eastern Panhandle real estate, but how do you go about organizing a move? The following tips will save you time, money, and energy during your move.
Create a List and Check It Twice
You might like to get a binder and organize it into segments or categories like Checklists, Utilities, Loan Documents, Receipts, Movers, Inventory, and Schedules. This will help you keep all of your information in one place when you're looking for that last contract or piece of paperwork. Create a checklist of everything that needs to be done, everything associated with your move, and keep it in the front pocket or attached to the binder's cover to keep you on track. Once you move, you can easily move these items and your binder into your home office for safe keeping.
Create a Legend
Start a moving legend with colored stickers or circular colored labels to represent each area of the house where boxes will go. For instance, use a red sticker for the kitchen, a green sticker for the garage, a blue sticker for the bathroom, and so on. You can also create a color-coded stock sheet to keep track of which colored sticker represents which category or area of your Eastern Panhandle home. These sheets are helpful for your movers so they know which places to drop boxes and can reference these sheets if you hang them throughout the home on doors.
These will be a great help in your move to a new home. Place them on boxes with the contents written on the stickers so movers know which to be extra careful handling. Avoid packing loose items in the moving truck or in your car due to lack of time or space— instead pack all of your items in like-sized boxes to keep them organized.
During your move to your new West Virginia home, you may get sidetracked or take a day off of packing. You will save yourself time searching for packing tape, stickers, and all of the essential moving supplies by keeping them in one basket or caddy. When you move from room to room to package your things, just bring the basket with you.
