After the holiday season has come to a close, the countdown to spring is on! Eastern Panhandle residents are ready to get out and about again, explore the community and slowly move out of their sleepy, winter routine. Our communities in Jefferson and Berkeley County have put together a series of fun events to kick off the new year and get you excited about what's to come in 2016 in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle!
Be sure to add the following fitness-themed events taking place in the first few months of 2016 to your calendar:
Frosty Family Fun Day
When: January 9, 2016; 12:30 PM to 3 PM
Where: Downtown Martinsburg WV, Town Square and Library Plaza
Many New Year's resolutions involve getting moving again after all of the holiday sweets and treats— Here's one way to get started! The Frosty Family Fun Day features a Frosty 5K or Snowflake 1-mile walk with activities at locations like the BE-Hive, George Children's Museum and Martinsburg Public Library along the way. There will also be a Snowman sponsored by Main Street Martinsburg that will come alive! You can register on the square at 12:30 PM, with the walks beginning at 1 PM and enjoy hot chocolate afterward!
Winter Wellness Fitness Challenge 2016
When: Entire month of February
Where: The Wellness Center at Berkeley Medical Center, Martinsburg WV
Any day during the month of February, you can pop into the Wellness Center in Martinsburg to sign-in and accept the Winter Wellness Challenge! The Challenge includes a 5K with a little twist— you will complete a 5K on a treadmill and test your strength by weight lifting. The amount you lift will be subtracted from your 5K time and the lower the overall score, the better! The winner will be crowned the Fittest Person in the Area!
2016 Shepherdstown Race for the Birds
When: April 9, 2016; 5K and 10K at 9 AM, Fun Run at 10 AM
Where: Wild Goose Farm, 293 Shepherd Grade Road, Shepherdstown, WV
Eastern Panhandle residents can now register for the 15th Annual Race for the Birds event in Shepherdstown! The event was previously held at the US Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center, but will now be held at the new location of Wild Goose Farm just across the road! There will be two timed races—a 5K and 10K—as well as a 1-mile "Fun Run" for kids under 10. The routes will follow cross-country trails through fields, hills and woods and will be suitable for all runners!
