Inwood Real Estate

South of Martinsburg on Interstate 81, is the town of Inwood.  Originally called Gerrard, historians say that there are two stories describing how the town got its name. One story theorizes that Inwood was named for the Park located there - Inwood Park.  The other story states that Jonathan Newton Thatcher of Gerrard, wanted to open a post office in the town, and Washington D.C. post authorities told Thatcher that he would have to rename the town of Gerrard, since it would conflict with mail going to Gerrardstown, a town four miles west. When Thatcher's cousin from Inwood, California, showed him a letter with his home address on it, Thatcher decided to use the name "Inwood" for the town. He then wrote to Washington D.C. to get the town's name changed from Gerrard to Inwood.

In the early years of the 20th century, a co-op among the area's many orchardists was established. The principal crop among those orchardists was apples.  In 1907, C.H. Musselman, together with his father, John Musselman, Sr. and younger brother, John S., purchased the Biglerville Canning Company, and renamed it C.H. Musselman Company.  The plant was the first apple processing plant of its kind, exclusively producing apple sauce. Forty years later, the trustees of the C.H. Musselman Foundation announced the construction of the first modern high school building for the general area of Inwood.  Planned in cooperation with the architects and representatives of the Berkeley County Board of Education, Musselman High School, was built by Musselman Company employees who took a personal interest in the project.

Within close proximity to the high school, just off Interstate 81, is a place for family fun in Inwood, JayDee's Family Fun Center.  Featuring indoor and outdoor activities including an arcade and jungle gym, JayDee's also has a fitness center and nature zone. Outdoor batting cages, a mini golf course, a water spray park with slides, go-karts and train rides are all on the property as well, enabling children and adults of all ages to have fun at this family-centered recreation center.

When your appetite gets the best of you, Inwood has an abundance of restaurants from which to choose. From Viva Mexico Family Restaurant to Kings NY Pizza and Restaurant, all of your taste buds can be satisfied in Inwood. For families wishing to cook their own meal, fresh herbs, apples and canned goods are the locals' choice at the Inwood Farmers Market. West Virginia wines, locally grown fruits, vegetables and breads are available year-round.

Many Inwood residents were born and raised here.  That means traditions have been passed down from generation to generation.  The South Berkeley Christmas Parade is one tradition that continues to grow each year.  Other historic treasures of Inwood include The Bunker Hill Mill and Morgan Cabin, both of which are registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
